The term 'social licence to operate’ was coined in 1997 by a Canadian mining executive to explain the need to clinch ongoing support from locals for mining development. But with more pressure on mining companies from host communities, host countries and society at large, better channels for organised activism, and fewer jobs at increasingly automated mines, miners need to refresh their approach
