PRESS RELEASE: The MoU is designed to foster closer collaboration between the world-famous mining school, based at the University of Exeter’s Penryn Campus in Cornwall, UK, and the GTK – one of Europe’s leading centres on assessment and sustainable use of geological resources.

The agreement, which has the potential to open up a rich variety of student, research and educational partnerships between the two organisations, was recently signed by the head of CSM, Professor Kip Jeffrey, and GTK’s director of science and innovations, Professor Pekka Nurmi.

Speaking after the signing, Professor Jeffrey said: “We are delighted to sign this agreement and look forward to developing a deep and lasting collaboration with GTK. While the Camborne School of Mines has a strong international reputation, it is important that we continue to develop these links with leading international organisations as we look to the future. We are greatly looking forward to a successful working relationship and are already engaged in projects with the GTK.”

The new MoU has the potential to open-up a host of exciting new research and educational pathways. Finland's special geology and currently buoyant exploration and mining industry provides an unrivalled opportunity to perform novel research on a range of world-class mineral deposits, as well as fieldwork in a challenging and unique natural environment, and the ability to visit operational and abandoned mine sites, as well as active exploration camps.

Among the research collaborations being discussed are projects relating to ‘green mining’, geothermal energy, and mine safety and environmental management. The two institutions are also looking at conducting professional exchange programmes for students and staff.
