The US advocacy group said Kinross is the eighth member company to complete the steps of its risk-based safety and health management system initiative.

“We congratulate Kinross on starting out 2018 with this noteworthy accomplishment in mine safety and health,” NMA CEO and president Hal Quinn said. “Kinross’ efforts have more than proven that putting people first is a true core value for the company and it goes above and beyond to make sure every employee returns home safe and healthy every day.”

Kinross president and CEO J Paul Rollinson said the company is proud to have one of the best safety records in the industry.

“We continuously work to maintain and strengthen our performance,” he said. “Mining responsibly is an imperative at Kinross and being certified under CORESafety ensures best practices are implemented at our operations.”

Predictive Safety conducted the independent audit for Kinross Gold.

The overall goal of CORESafety is zero fatalities and a 50% reduction in mining’s injury rate within five years. Last year, CORESafety companies recorded zero fatalities across US operations.

Other certified companies include Cloud Peak Energy Resources, Coeur Mining, Dyno Nobel, Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold, Hecla Mining, Newmont Mining and Peabody Energy.
