The company, which has joined other partners such as Applied Materials and Google in the partnership ranks, said joining the Copper Mark is a natural step, as it is an enabler of sustainable mining.

Group CEO Thomas Schulz said with FLSmidth already being a part of sustainable development in mining, it can make strides on its MissionZero ambition, which is to support, enable and work with customers to move towards zero energy, zero water waste and zero emissions by 2030.

"As a member of the copper supply chain, we acknowledge our role in supporting responsible production. We encourage the mission and vision of the Copper Mark organisation, and we are committed to expressing preference for copper producers assured by its framework."

The Copper Mark includes organizations in the copper value chain that either use or rely on copper which have also publicly committed to responsible production and sourcing of the material.

The Copper Mark is currently working on developing a chain of custody system that will make the Assurance Framework available to other organisations in the value chain in the programme's Phase 2.

Some producer members of the Copper Mark include Rio Tinto, Antofagasta and Freeport-McMoRan.
