The machines, including a pair of SY956H front-end loaders, a SMG200 grader, a SY500H excavator and a SY335 excavator were delivered to Ukubhukuda Trading. Two of Ukabhukuda's divisions - Tipper & Co and E&J Construction - are contractors for the renovation.

The SYL956H1 loader, ideal for heavy duty operations, has a bucket capacity of 2.7m3 to 3.2m3 standard and a 4.5m3 coal bucket. With a rated load of 5,000kg and 172kN max lifting force, the 162kW-rated machine's high efficiency drive system and rotary automatic gearbox can increase travel speeds by 10% and towing force by more than 6%.

The SY335 is features a high-quality wear-resistant plate for added endurance and reliability. It has a maximum digging depth of 6,170mm and a transport length of 11.1m.

GEM eMalahleni sales executive Lee Sampson said it first teamed up with Ukubhukuda Trading in March 2017, when the company purchased each of those models.

"As soon as Ukubhukuda Trading commenced with rehabilitation work at Arnot, they purchased an extra two machines, and we are in the process of delivering a further three SYL956H1 front-end loaders," he said.

The SY500H excavator and an additional SYL956H1 front-end loader were purchased by E&J Construction in May. The former is a Tier 4, 50.5t excavator with a bucket capacity of 3.1m3.

"We are currently finalising two more deals with E&J," Sampson noted, adding that all of the GEM-supplied units possess a standard 250-hour service plan.

The Arnot coking coal mine has both underground and surface elements and a reserve base of 192Mt.
