The Nanlutian mine is in Holingol in China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region, in an area rich in sub-bituminous coal reserves. The mine plans to gradually replace its diesel-powered dump trucks with electric ones. Its aim is promoting green, low-carbon and environmentally friendly production in the coal mining industry.

Hunan-headquartered Xiangtan Electric Manufacturing Group replaced the truck's diesel engine with batteries. The truck uses batteries that can run continuously for eight hours following one hour of charging.

The company noted that compared to trucks using diesel engines, electric drive trucks can reduce energy consumption by 50% while reducing operational costs and maintenance by 20%.

The local branch of the integrated energy group State Power Investment Corp (SPIC), which is leading the programme, added that each truck can reduce CO2 emissions by 1,500t/y.

Liu Jianping, party secretary and chairman of the branch, said: "The truck is a significant milestone in the upgrading of mining equipment. It is intelligent and zero-carbon, and will set an example for others in the industry."
