Vancouver-based Teck Resources has inked an agreement with Caterpillar to deploy 30 Caterpillar zero-emission haul trucks at Teck operations starting in 2027.
The phases included early development, piloting, and deployment. Among the trucks will be the Cat 794 ultra-class truck model.
The deployment will occur over several phases, starting with initially deploying the haul trucks at Teck's Elk Valley steelmaking operations in British Columbia. Elk Valley is powered by hydropower, with a 95% clean energy grid.
Teck has resolved to reduce its Scope 1 emissions by 33% by 2030, and be carbon-neutral by 2050, in line with International Council on Mining & Metals guidelines.
Other mining companies have also contracted Cat for their zero-emission haul trucks.
In September 2021, Rio Tinto signed a deal with the mining equipment manufacturer to deploy 35 zero-emission autonomous haul trucks at their Western Australian mining operations.
The 35 trucks are expected to be deployed at its most technically advanced iron ore mine in the Pilbara, Gudai Darri. Rio launched a program to train employees to use autonomous equipment in September.
Rio Tinto will also deploy the world's first autonomous water truck, also manufactured by Caterpillar, at the mine project.
