Inmarsat is partnering with equity firm Atlantic Bridge and cloud software developer Civic Connect on Insight Terra, which will offer a platform based on technology used in Inmarsat's cloud-based tailings facilities monitoring tool, Insight Platform.
The company's business model is "Platform-as-a-Service", with the platform able to consolidate data from different sensors and connectivity types, monitoring TSFs and water facilities.
To do this, it will include edge-based data ingestion, validation and aggregation from sensors, historians and other data sources.
It will also leverage Inmarsat's L-band satellite connectivity, to ensure real-time data transfer from the mine site to the cloud-based Insight Platform
Insight Terra has raised USD$5.45 million in Series A funding, led by Atlantic Bridge. It will initially be majority-owned by Civic Connect.
"The formation of Insight Terra as a specialised Paas provider by Inmarsat, along with funding from Atlantic Bridge, will enable us to help mining companies monitor their tailings facilities and manage associated risks more effectively," said Insight Terra CEO Alastair Bovim.
Tailings monitoring is the firm's inital initially, but the partners said the solution will be used to support a multitude of environmental and infrastructure monitoring use cases more broadly in mining, including water management and pit wall stability.
"The entire Civic Connect team is excited to be a key part in the launch of Insight Terra, and to be leading the global market for environmental and infrastructure risk management at such a critical time given the exigencies of climate change," added Gregory Curtin, Ph.D., Founder of Civic Connect.
