The International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) has published a training manual designed to be used by tailings professionals to educate and improve awareness of integrated management.

The body said the manual would be based on the ICMM Tailings Management: Good Practice Guide and aim to build capacity across the industry by "providing, interactive resource to illustrate key concepts of good governance and engineering practices."

Additionally, it said the manual would provide "comprehensive guidance on tailings management" and integrate more robust governance around four key areas: corporate policy, operation activities, information management and oversight preparedness.

Aidan Davy, chief operating officer of ICMM, said companies would be a "vital tool" to help build capacity on tailings management."

Davy said the manual could be "customised to an individual site or company" to "make it more relevant for the audience.

"ICMM is committed to continual improvement in the safe and transparent management of tailings facilities.

"The training material we have developed from ICMM's Tailings Management Good Practice Guide is a vital tool to help build capacity on tailings management across the industry - particularly as companies focus on implementing the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management across their sites."

Last May, the ICMM also launched Conformance Protocols for the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (known as the Standard) and a Tailings Management: Good practice guide.
