PRESS RELEASE: Rio Tinto recently concluded a series of local procurement workshops in Perth, with almost 1,000 participants across the state.
Speaking after the event at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre, Rio Tinto Iron Ore chief executive Chris Salisbury said he was excited by the level of interest shown by the WA business community and inspired by the success stories shared.
“Our new approach will make it easier for WA businesses to compete for contracts with us as well as with some of our major suppliers, which is why we’re thrilled by today’s turnout. WA is the home to our iron ore operations and local businesses have been critical to our ongoing success," Salisbury commented.
“While we already award 77% of our contracts to local suppliers, we want to do more to encourage local businesses to work with us. The local procurement programme will encourage businesses to thrive and employment opportunities grow across the state.
“We recognise the social and economic contribution made by local businesses. These businesses employ and train local people, are an integral part of the community, and help make WA a better place to live.”
Earlier this month workshops were also held in Dampier and Tom Price, with attendees encouraged by Rio Tinto’s improved approach to prioritise local businesses wherever possible.
In addition to the continued delivery of workshops, the local procurement programme incorporates the following components:
- A new online procurement portal, which enables businesses to register interest and view upcoming procurement opportunities well in advance.
- A team of local procurement specialists, dedicated to analysing work opportunities and identifying local procurement opportunities.
- Increased collaboration with major suppliers to raise awareness of opportunities with these suppliers for local businesses.
- Partnering with small business development specialists to provide training and mentoring support to selected businesses who need assistance to effectively compete for tenders.
