The 3,553m2 facility in Auburn Hills, Michigan, US, north of Detroit, includes 1,923m2 of space for collaborative working and another 1,644m2 dedicated to shop floor space.

Also included is a 297m2 AM customer centre, equipped with two EOS M290 Direct Metal Laser Sinter (DMLS) printers. The DMLSs include powder bed fusion technology to create prototypes with a lead time of two weeks, and allow customers to test elements such as usability, ergonomics, manufacturability and materials in the development projects' early stages.

GKN and its 80-worker staff from its Hoeganaes, GKN Sinter Metals and GKN Additive subsidiaries cut the ribbon on the new office space on April 8th.

"This building reinforces our commitment to the North American market and continued global growth," said Reid Southby, GKN Sinter Metals large segment president.

"This metro-Detroit location expands GKN Powder Metallurgy's global 3-D printing network, providing customers the exclusive opportunity for efficient lead times and local customer support at their fingertips. The building offers room for growth, and GKN Powder Metallurgy stays committed to global development in metal AM for prototypes, medium series and aftermarket."

GKN has a combined staff of 7,400 in more than 30 global locations.
