Nutrien to temporarily idle mines

Canadian miner cites market conditions for decision

The potash facilities, which will each suspend operations for up to eight weeks, include the Allan, Lanigan and Vanscoy mines in Saskatchewan, Canada. If all three are idled for the full eight weeks, Nutrien officials said it would reduce its production of potash by 700,000 tonnes.

"Despite the current short-term market conditions, we remain positive on potash demand for 2020, as well as the medium to long-term potash fundamentals," it said.

"We remain focused on a gradual ramp-up of production to meet demand and to ensure we operate the safest, most reliable and efficient potash business in the world."

Other potash mines in the Nutrien portfolio include Cory, Patience Lake and Rocanville. They, too, are all located in Saskatchewan.

In all, Nutrien produces and distributes 27 million tonnes of potash, nitrogen and phosphate products worldwide annually.
