The selection of PTK, an Aboriginal business, also fulfills an element of Fortscue's Billion Opportunities initiative, which offers economic and employment opportunities for Aboriginal people. To date since the procurement programme's inception in 2011, the company has awarded A$2.5 billion (US$1.67 billion) in contracts and subcontracts.
"Reducing waste through the prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse of materials produced during operations is a priority for Fortescue," Fortescue COO Greg Lilleyman said of the PTK deal.
"Last financial year, Fortescue recycled 91% of non-mineral waste, such as food, packaging and office consumables, from across our sites."
In all, the mining company partners with more than 120 Aboriginal businesses and joint venture partners under the Billion Opportunities programme. It first inked a deal with PTK in 2017.
