Company transformer customises for coal operation

While the supplier did not identify the recipient of the skid-mounted unit with a 1,250kVA dual-MV configuration, it said the harsh environment of the operation required a fit-for-purpose solution.

It added the transformer can be linked to either 11kV or 6.6kV supply, giving it flexibility for the client's needs.

"The cast-resin dry-type transformer is ideal for the mobile arrangement as it is cooled without oil," MD David Claassen said. "The absence of oil makes it a safer option in terms of fire hazards, especially on a coal mine."

Additionally, he noted, since there is no chance of an oil spill, the compact-enclosure transformer is also more environmentally friendly. The cast-resin unit has a Class H insulation rating, making it ideal for both medium-voltage and low-voltage windings.

The insulation standard ensures that the transformer can withstand temperatures of up to 180°C. Claassen pointed out the unit's enclosure design needed to accommodate these heat factors while preventing dust and water ingress.

Claassen confirmed the transformer would be relocated on a regular basis by the mine, thus the mobile skid as well as special engineering to create an elevated level of mechanical rigidity. For this specific application, the movement, vibration and any other forces must not impact the equipment's performance.

"We can provide various dry-type transformer enclosed solutions with a mobile skid, which is a versatile format for a range of mining applications," he said.
