The installation of a solar array and battery storage is in line with the producer's environmental and sustainability focus and will reduce electrical and operating costs long-term by reducing peak utility demand.
Chairman and CEO Mark Jensen said: "With the advancement of solar and other renewable power technologies, opportunities are now available for the company to allow for increased efficiencies and reduced costs at its processing, logistics and industrial complexes."
American Resources has been working with Kentucky-based Edelen Renewables to evaluate and build a solar array at the complex.
"It's time for the mining industry to increase its innovation and adoption of more sustainable and renewable practices. The legacy mentality has reduced the overall competitiveness of the industry and we are extremely proud to take the lead to better align the industry with a modern-day economy," Jensen added.
American Resources believes PCR would be the world's first application of on-site solar to reduce utility demand charges at a coal mining complex. The installation has the potential for a more than a 20% reduction in PRC's total utility costs long-term.
The company is still evaluating other opportunities to use solar, battery storage and other technologies for off-grid power solutions to save costs.
The miner did not specify a timeline for the installation.
