The new facilities to be added include a new roaster, a new sulphuric acid plant, expansion and modernisation of the leaching and the purification plant, a new cellhouse and expansion of the foundry and quay infrastructure.

Boliden said the expansion would be powered by  hydroelectric power, and that waste will be processed in "in mountain caverns using unique, sustainable technology". The smelter will also extract bi-metals lead, gold and silver.

"The expansion project also means that the level of digitization and automation in the operation will increase, which will help improve productivity," said the company.

The expansion project is planned to run between 2021-2024.

Poor smelter performance impacted the company's earnings in the June quarter, reported Mining Journal.

The company said the lower smelter volumes were down to lower feed grades and maintenance at Kokkola in Finland. Boliden reported earnings of SEK 8.00/share, 10% below consensus estimates.
