The deployment of the 5G-ready network at the mine is in support of Teck's RACE21 programme for developing its mines to assets harnessing new technology and innovation.

Shaw said the industrial-grade system, which was built exclusively for Teck, will offer better coverage and more reliability than traditional non-dedicated wireless networks. It will provide greater efficiencies and value for Elkview. Teck is also looking at  employing the technology at its other operations.

"Teck's RACE21 program aims to generate new value, reduce operating costs and significantly improve safety, sustainability and productivity at our operations, and improving network infrastructure will support achieving those goals," said Teck chief transformation officer and senior vice president Andrew Milner.

Shaw added the solution is fully private and can operate 'mission-critical' applications without conflict or the operational and IT constraints some other options bring. It is based on Nokia's industrial-grade private wireless system.

"The global economy is on the verge of the next industrial revolution — a change that will be driven entirely by 5G and other advanced connected technologies," Shaw communications business president Katherine Emberly said.

"Through this project, we were able to combine our spectrum assets with our deep industry knowledge and sector expertise to help Teck boost productivity, efficiency, and improve safety while transforming their network infrastructure to deliver significant operational value."

The companies did not indicate any readiness timeline for the Elkview deployment.
