Mayfair Gold has acquired carbon offsets for its Fenn-Gibb gold project in the Timmins region of northeastern Ontario.
The offsets apply to 2021 emissions, Mayfair Gold's first year of operations.
The company plans to be the first carbon-neutral gold project in Canada.
Mayfair Gold purchased the carbon credits from the Thermal Residential Heating Aggregation Project, which replaces traditionally polluting means of heating with solar-powered heating systems in Canadian private residences.
Mayfair Gold emitted 738 tonnes of CO2-equivalent greenhouse gases throughout 2021, as confirmed by independent assessment company Carbonzero. This takes into consideration Scope 1, Scope 2, and most material Scope 3 emissions.
Carbon emissions emanated primarily from exploration activities at Fenn-Gib.
"At Fenn-Gib, we are laying the foundation for Canada's first carbon-neutral gold mine," chief executive Patrick Evans said.
"Our commitment started January 1, 2021, when Mayfair acquired Fenn-Gib, and will continue through our exploration programme, mine development, operations, and eventual closure."
Fenn-Gib contains 2.08 million ounces of indicated gold resources.
In January, Mayfair Gold projected it would have a resource update in the September quarter, with a preliminary economic assessment of the project completed by the December quarter.
Mayfair Gold hopes to increase the deposit size to 3 million ounces.
The company received positive metallurgical tests in March, and will be completed in December.
