Mining has traditionally been one of the world's most male-dominated industries, but women—whether as members of mining societies, affected communities, or leaders—have always influenced how extraction is done. Tides are changing now as more women enter both the boardrooms and worksites at mines across the globe. The intersection between gender and mining is a complex one. Crucially, a growing number of women are affected by operations, whether as informal or formal miners, leaders, or community members. As the industry evolves, it is clear that women must play a greater role in decision-making, gain benefits, and not suffer at the hands of irresponsible mining.
In this webinar, we delve into whether current efforts to increase female representation in mining are truly effective or simply PR tactics. We will explore pressing concerns like "women-washing," where companies highlight female executives without addressing broader issues such as underpaying workers, getting more people on mining boards, and the impact of conflict minerals on women and children.
