Volvo's TA15 autonomous electric hauler, built by Volvo Autonomous Solutions, is a battery-electric load carrier with a 15-tonne hauling capacity and is an element of the OEM's TARA transport solution, allowing untis to be linked together. The automation system uses GPS, Lidar, Radar and multiple sensors and has no traditional operator cabin.
It is based on the former HX02 concept.
Also a winner in the design competition was the GHH MK-42 dump truck for underground mining. With a 45-tonne capacity and a dump box range of 19 cubic metres to 24 cubic metres, the machine is power rated at 460 kW.
It is the newest addition to the company's line-up, designed by operators and featuring a dumping angle of 68 degree. It has greater traction and higher driving comfort because of its oscillating articulation and front axle suspension system.
"The TA15 reflects an important step towards automation," Red Dot said of the Volvo machine.
It added of the GHH unit: "Straight lines and a distinctive surface design give the MK-42 dump truck its modern appearance [and] it also convinces with respect to safety and operating convenience."
The Red Dot award offers designers and manufacturers worldwide the chance to have their products assessed and potentially selected for having the best design. In 2020, participants from 60 countries entered more than 6,500 products in the contest.
