Brazil-based Vale has signed an agreement with Chinese firm XCMG Construction Machinery to receive mining and infrastructure equipment, including equipment that is zero-emission and autonomous.

XCMG Construction Machinery is a subsidiary of Xuzhou Construction Machinery Group, China's largest machinery manufacturer.

XCMG will deliver two electrical battery-powered mining haul trucks up to 72 tonnes with zero-emission to Vale's Minas Gerais operations and its operations in Indonesia in the first half of 2022.

The Chinese firm will also send another zero-emission electrical truck with up to 240 tonnes, but the date of delivery has not been specified.

The companies signed the MoU on October 26.

The agreement is "in line with Vale's goal of reducing its carbon emissions of scope 1 and scope 2 by 33% by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050," Vale executive vice president for global business solutions Alexandre Pereira said.

Vale is a member of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), which earlier this month pledged that its members would move to zero-emission mining by 2050 or sooner.
