Mining activities have already stopped at the open pit and satellite pits in Cuyuni-Mazaruni. The miner's plan includes processing the existing stockpiles at the site until the end of June.

Once complete, the overground operation will officially transition to care and maintenance.

"The phased reduction of activity and employees is well under way and is expected to be completed over the course of the coming weeks," Guyana officials said, noting that it will keep full-time security at the site.

It will also be keeping crews online for site maintenance, including environmental monitoring and compliance, and will operate infrastructure such as the camp, power and water supplies and other systems at a reduced level.

Guyana Goldfields is in the process of transitioning from open-pit mining to underground mining.

Rory's Knoll is part of the miner's Aurora complex. The underground development portion of the project saw first blast in November 2018.
