On-demand webinar: Risk Appetite & Tolerance

Without risk, there is no reward. This is especially true in business. In order to meet strategic objectives and deliver a profit, risks need to be taken. But how exactly do you calculate how much risk is worth taking? And what other factors need to be considered?

In this on-demand Webinar, we were joined by risk experts Sarah Gordon and Ollie de Boer from Satarla as they discussed risk appetite and tolerance; how it's used to guide decision making and what best practice looks like.

In this webinar you'll learn:

  • What is the difference between risk appetite and tolerance?
  • How do I set risk appetite and tolerance for my organization?
  • Theory versus practice: how do other risk managers use risk appetite to guide decision making?
  • Which technology tools can help?

Dr Sarah Gordon, CEO at Satarla

Having completed her PhD at Imperial College, Sarah then went on to work as a Geologist for Anglo American. She was lucky enough to live and work in Canada, Brazil, Southern Africa, and Europe, in a variety of functions from exploration through to sustainability, risk management and assurance. This grounding allowed her to explore different risk management techniques and uses, applying them to real situations. Together with two other risk managers, Sarah founded Satarla in 2014 (www.satarla.com). Now with 55 Associates based around the world, Satarla provides risk management consultancy, training and research to organizations from sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, charities, finance, together with petrochemicals, energy, oil & gas, and mining. Sarah is the Chair for Foreign Affairs and External Relations for the Geological Society of London, an Honorary visiting lecturer at Imperial College London and Research Associate at the University of Johannesburg.

Ollie de Boer, Software Lead at Satarla

Ollie began working in risk management over a decade ago at the Ministry of Justice, UK. Trained as a social scientist by the University of Bath and latterly as a criminologist by the London School of Economics, he is an enterprise risk management, project management and information technology professional, supported by professional practitioner qualifications in risk (CIRM), and project management (PRINCE2). This diverse skillset has allowed him to be the Group Risk Manager for one of the largest companies in the world, G4S plc, to consult and train to clients in enterprise risk management as a Satarla Associate, and as the Software Lead at Satarla to specialize in delivering risk management software advisory services to clients.

John Castner, Managing Director at IsoMetrix

A graduate of the University of California, John started his technology career around 13 years ago, at CMO software. His focus was on translating the tools and skill sets he learned as a teacher and coach in order to present simple solutions to complex problems around GRC, HSE and Social Management. John's client portfolio includes dozens of global brands and hundreds of customers across a range of high-risk industries including mining, oil & gas, renewables, transport, logistics, utilities, food & retail, manufacturing, and financial services. This broad experience has allowed John to recognize the common challenges facing both low and high performing organizations, and how the right tools enable teams to better manage risk and opportunity. John is now the Managing Director of the Americas division of IsoMetrix, one of the world's leading developers of software solutions for integrated risk management.
