Renault signs MoU on 'green' nickel sulphate

Deal with Terrafame part of strategy to achieve carbon neutrality

Renault Group has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Terrafame, a Finnish producer of EV battery chemicals, for a future supply of nickel sulphate.

The company described the partnership as a "game-changer" in the battery materials value chain. It said it is part of its strategy to be carbon neutral in Europe by 2040 and will help it build an electric ecosystem in northern France.

The MoU will also build on other agreements Renault Group has signed with Vulcan to secure low-carbon lithium and Veolia & Solvay to recycle battery materials in a closed-loop.

It will guarantee up to 15 GWh of annual nickel sulphate supply a year, Renault Group claimed.

The parties said commitments such as these simplify the global commodities supply chain.

Gianluca De Ficchy, managing director, Alliance Purchasing Organisation, Renault Group, said the partnership is "an important component" in its goal to cut emissions in its supply chain by 2030.

"Low carbon footprint and traceability of battery chemicals are crucial factors to us, and Terrafame has a clear edge on sustainability through its unique production method," De Ficchy said.

"The carbon footprint of nickel sulphate produced by Terrafame is more than 60% smaller than the industry average."

Joni Lukkaroinen, chief executive officer, Terrafame, claimed the MoU will set "proper guidelines for the coming decade" and could mean the company supplies nickel sulphate for 300,000 EVs annually.
