The newest deal is an expansion of scope for the firm’s existing operations work with the miner; it includes mining overburden and coal at the mine’s southern end.
Thiess has been providing load-and-haul services at open-cut Mt Arthur Coal, located near Muswellbrook, since December 2016.
“We have a long history in the Hunter Valley dating back to 1940s,” CIMIC group executive for mining and mineral processing and Thiess managing director Douglas Thompson added.
“We look forward to continuing to support BHP, while creating opportunities for local jobs and local suppliers.”
Thiess is no stranger to BHP’s other portfolio mines, either, with a presence at three mines and operation of two maintenance workshops in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales.
Mt Arthur, the largest coal operation in that region, produces about 20 million raw tonnes per year.
