UK-based company urges greater collaboration across industry and with customers

The Weir Group, a UK-based engineering company, has committed to a Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) as part of its strategy to cut Scope 3 carbon emissions in the value chain.

The company said it would pursue "further innovation to reduce energy consumption per tonne of ore processed" to cut carbon emissions.

However, it said meeting SBTi expectations would "also require broader energy transformation in mining" and that it is "ready to partner with customers" to do so.

The company will focus on Scope 3 emissions because these are critical to its customers as the value chain is "dominated" by its products and solutions.

It explained that engineering innovative products and solutions would deliver its ambitions and those of its customers.

Jon Stanton, chief executive officer of the Weir Group, said transforming the environmental footprint of the mining sector "will not be easy."

"Adopting science-based targets sees us stepping up our commitment to our customers and society, to work in partnership to develop the solutions needed to tackle climate change head-on," Stanton said.
