Created, and commercialised at the Weir Isando operation, the new release is a versatile submersible pump that combines wear-resistant materials and specialist hydraulic engineering for abrasive applications, including slurry and sludge removal.

Other applications include mine dewatering, removing mill scale and cleaning up sumps as well as moving slurry, coal-pile run-off or dirty water with a solids content of up to 60% by volume.

Pumps product manager Marnus Koorts said the pump can actually be moved easily between applications, making it simple to handle temporary problems like leaks of pipe bursts. It is constructed with Weir's Ultrachrome A05 high-chrome alloy - including its casing, impeller and wear plates - so that and its motor can allow for continuous operation and also aid in dissipating heat build-up in its motor windings.

The impeller radial load in the pump's design has the balance of opposing forces, which has been created by a twin-volute discharge. This element of its construction stabilises the pump during operation, and means it can be placed in any position without the risk of oscillating.

"Users of the Warman SSB pump can also choose to run it in manual or the optional extra, in automatic mode," Koorts said. "The automatic mode provides the convenience of self-monitoring water levels, switching on and off as required."

Weir said that electrical control philosophies can be adapted to suit site applications including over-current protection, an earth leakage circuit breaker. Meanwhile, its safety delay feature can reduce the number of starts per hour.
