Montabert drifters cuts costs by 60%

Project Challenge:

Frustrated by its drilling costs, a palladium and platinum mine agreed to let Joy Global run tests comparing our Montabert HC110 to a leading competitor's hydraulic drifter, to see if the Montabert drifter could help the mine reduce costs while improving safety and performance.

The Solution:

Joy Global conversion experts and mining application engineering teams collected data on the performance of a drill rig equipped with a leading competitor's hydraulic drifter and compared it to the performance of a Montabert HC110CS hydraulic drifter installed on the same drill rig. Field time studies and data analysis were completed with the customer on site.

/

The validation of the Montabert HC110CS drifter conversion along with Joy Global's product knowledge and proven product performance provided cost savings and performance improvements when compared to the competitor's offering.

The Results:

The Montabert HC110CS conversion exceeded the performance benchmarks requested by the customer: improving penetration rates, reducing consumable costs and decreasing noise levels.

  • /

    Penetration rates increased by 8.34%
  • Bit life increased by 47%, decreasing exposure hours due to fewer change outs, and simplifying required maintenance
  • Shank life increased by 60%
  • Noise levels decreased by approximately 6dB, from 112dB to 106dB, improving the safety of the operating conditions and extending the amount of time employees can safely work with the equipment.
  • 50% reduction in service interval, as rebuild with Montabert drifters is once every 800 hours compared to 1 rebuild every 400 hours with competitor's offering.
  • Total unit operating cost reduction of 56.8%

The customer is looking to convert its entire drill fleet to take advantage of the Montabert drifter performance, reliability and drill efficiency, supported by Joy Global's worldwide service capabilities.
