Exxaro said its Khetha Ukuphepa (Choose Safety) programme, launched at the end of 2019, had resulted in stricter safety standards.

The programme includes strategic training initiatives on potential hazards such as machinery, dust inhalation, silicosis, as well as noise and fatigue.

"This marks a great milestone for our company and for the future of the South African mining industry," said Dr Joseph Matjila, Group Manager for Safety and Health.

"The leadership and strategic initiatives to improve safety regulations have ensured that all of our employees can work in an environment they can trust, and that they can return home to their loved ones unharmed," he added.

Between 2007-2012, the company averaged over three fatalities a year.  The most recent fatality at Exxaro happened on March 1 in 2017 at Matla Coal, Mine 2 Operation.

Exxaro CEO, Mxolisi Mgojo, added that a Minerals Council South Africa programme that established the CEO Zero Harm Forum in 2012 had also helped to further health and safety commitments and initiatives.
